The petroleum industry must predict pore-pressure profiles accurately, often walking a fine line between pore pressure and fracture gradient as it drills and completes oil and gas wells. The industry also finds it difficult to predict pore pressure ahead of the drill bit, during exploration, creating concern for well control.Pore pressure in the subsurface results from force-balanced mineral and fluid load-sharing relationships.
