The accompanying table shows how Nelson-Farrar indexes have changed over the period, 1998-2000, for selected basically nonmetallic building materials.

Data are included for the overall nonmetallic group, five nonmetallic materials, and iron castings.

Building brick, concrete ingredients, and concrete products indexes showed the greatest changes during the period.

Concrete ingredients changed from 770.9 in the first quarter of 1998 to 834.4 in the fourth quarter of 2000. Building brick, showing the greatest gains of the three, changed from 982.9 in the first quarter to 1098.6 in the fourth quarter of the period tested. During the same period, concrete products changed from 651.6 to 706.0.

Fireclay brick and clay products showed more moderate changes, although none of the changes in the indexes were drastic. The Fireclay brick index rose from 1195.6 to 1224.3 over the 3-year period. Clay products changed from 781.1 to 825.9.

The smallest index change occurred in the iron castings category, changing from 1,117.3 in the first quarter of 1998 to 1,133.9 in the fourth quarter of 2000.

The final category, the overall nonmetallic index, changed from 722.7 to a high of 770.7 during the second quarter of 2000.
