Irresponsible choices

Sept. 17, 2001
I thought at first that Mr. Matt Janoviak's letter(OGJ, Aug. 27, 2001, p. 10) was written with tongue in cheek. But I finally decided he was serious.

I thought at first that Mr. Matt Janoviak's letter(OGJ, Aug. 27, 2001, p. 10) was written with tongue in cheek. But I finally decided he was serious.

He wants mandated mileage standards, mandated solar cells for all new homes, and says "we're not mature enough to make the tough decisions on our own" so "legislators should force us to act responsibly by removing irresponsible choices."

So Mr. Janoviak thinks that legislators and bureaucrats know what is best for us. So there goes the freedom and liberty that many thousands have bled and died for.

I think that he should do the responsible thing and require the women in his family to put the wash on the line to dry, wash dishes by hand, get rid of that electricity-wasting refrigerator, live with the thermostat on 80 in the summer and 65 in the winter, get rid of the SUVs and minivans, and buy those little cars even though they are not safe when in a wreck with a bigger vehicle.

That way he could allow me to make choices which fit my family and circumstances and not by fiat from a repressive government.

And, yes, I'll use that tax refund check when I get it to put gas in my SUV.
