State-owned Uzbekneftegas is commissioning parts of its grassroots petrochemical complex in the Shurtan area, south of Uzbekistan, expected to start up by the end of this year.

The complex will use natural gas to produce 140,000 tonnes/year of ethylene and 125,000 tonnes/year of polyethylene. It also includes a butene-1 copolymer production plant.

The project will cost more than $1 billion. ABB and three Japanese firms, Mitsui & Co. Ltd., Toyo Engineering Corp., and Nissho Iwai Corp., are responsible for a $600 million turnkey part of the project. Local companies are performing the remaining $400 million of general construction work.

Output from this plant will fulfill both the state's domestic demand and be exported to nearby states.
