Hull design for floating, production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels can be challenging, as the maritime and offshore industries may have conflicting approaches.The maritime industry generally follows the "empirical rule" approach, while the offshore industry prefers "first-principle" methods. FPSO structure design incorporates elements of both, so designers in each industry need to be aware of the basis and limitations of the respective approaches.
