Until recently, energy-producing companies have not directed enough attention to the effectiveness of their workforce pay and rewards structure. Traditionally, the energy industry carefully nurtured executive pay but not necessarily the compensation of others in the company. Personnel pay, while costly, can represent a relatively small cost of doing business in the energy industry compared with other costs in such a capital-intensive industry.
