One of the world's biggest petroleum associations has a new leadership team.

Marlan W. Downey will assume the presidency of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists on July 1, after serving as AAPG president-elect in 1999-2000. Downey is Bartell Professor of Geology and chief scientist at the University of Oklahoma's Sarkeys Center.

Among others on the 2000-01 AAPG executive committee are Robbie Rice Gries, head of Priority Oil & Gas Co., Denver. She was elected president-elect and will serve as AAPG president during 2001-02.

Also elected to the committee were Ronald A. Nelson, of BP Amoco PLC, as vice-president; and New Orleans consultant Edward B. Picou Jr., as treasurer.

Remaining on the committee are Charles R. Noll, Houston geologist, serving as secretary; and Neil F. Hurley, Colorado School of Mines, serving as AAPG editor.

And San Antonio consultant Lowell Lischer will serve on the committee as chairman of the House of Delegates.

Other personnel changes this week involve new faces at the top ranks of a number of independent oil and gas exploration and production companies, including a key change at a Canadian independent that has affected the company's efforts to seek a buyer.

And a couple of majors report a series of shuffles in key positions in their organizations.

Beau Canada

The president and CEO of Beau Canada Exploration Ltd., Calgary, has resigned, and the company has been taken off the market temporarily (OGJ Online, Apr. 30, 2000).

Bruce Libin, a securities lawyer, has been appointed chairman and says there are no plans to replace outgoing CEO Tom Bugg.

Libin said the mid-sized producer will be put back on the market in mid-June. A special committee of the board is now managing the sales process.

The company operates in Western Canada and has oil and gas production of about 15,714 boe/d. As part of a financial restructuring, Beau Canada renegotiated terms of a $42 million (Can.) loan with Enron Canada Corp., extending the loan to Dec. 12 from June 11.The firm is also distributing its controlling interest in unit Genoil Inc. to Beau Canada shareholders.

Other E&P changes

Peter J. Hill has been named president and CEO of Benton Oil & Gas Co., Carpinteria, Calif. He replaces Bruce M. McIntyre and Michael B. Wray, who have co-chaired the office. Hill was COO and executive director of Hardy Oil & Gas PLC, London.

Joe Jaggers has been elected president and COO of Barrett Resources Corp., Denver. He succeeds A. Ralph Reed, who is retiring. Jaggers was a business unit leader for BP Amoco. He started his career with predecessor Amoco in 1981, working in a wide variety of operations and engineering positions in many regions, including operations manager for Amoco's Rocky Mountain Northwest business unit. Jaggers will join Barrett in July.

Dennis B. Tower has been appointed president of First International Oil Corp., Houston. He joins the company from ARCO-recently acquired by BP Amoco-where he has worked for the past 28 years. Tower succeeds Bill D. Holland, formerly interim president. Holland has been appointed chairman.

Stephen M. "Mike" Oxley has been named president and COO of Oxley Petroleum Co., Tulsa. He was vice-president of engineering and based in Fort Smith, Ark. Oxley, a nephew of the late company cofounder John T. Oxley and cousin of its current Chairman and cofounder, Jack Oxley, says he plans to expand operations in the Arkoma basin and to accelerate drilling activity in Oklahoma.

Majors' shuffles

Marty Klitten has been named executive vice-president of Chevron Corp., San Francisco, replacing Jim Sullivan, who is retiring. Klitten was CFO. He will be responsible for Chevron's refining and marketing operations in North America and its shipping and pipeline companies. John Watson replaces Klitten. Watson was vice-president, strategic planning. Patricia Yarrington, president of Chevron Canada Ltd., Vancouver, BC, will succeed Watson. Darry Callahan, president of Chevron Chemical Co., has been appointed executive vice-president of the parent. He will be responsible for human resources; technology, chemical additives, and coal companies; the new Chevron-Phillips chemicals joint venture; the Dynegy power and natural gas business; and Chevron's joint venture with Sasol. All changes are effective Aug. 1.

J. D. (Jim) McColgin has been promoted to president, exploration-production, Africa, Asia Pacific, and Middle East, of Conoco Inc., effective July 1. He is currently president and general manager of Conoco Indonesia. He replaces T. E. (Ted) Davis, who has retired. McColgin will be located in the Houston office. W. R. (Rick) Hamm, chairman and managing director of Conoco Ltd., Warwick, UK, has been promoted to president, refining and marketing, Europe. He will be located in London. Hamm succeeds D. O. (Dave) Kem, who will transfer to Houston from London until his retirement later this year. S. M. (Steve) Theede has been named president, exploration-production, Europe. He will be located in London.
