On July 16, 1998, Shell Prospecting and Development Peru issued an unexpected announcement. Alongside Mobil, its partner, SPDP was withdrawing from Camisea, Peru, after more than $250 million had been invested in exploration, appraisal drilling, and engineering design over the previous 2 years. Although these two oil giants could not reach an agreement with the Peruvian government, managers involved in the project believe that the work they carried out in the region set a benchmark for environmental practice.
