Saudi Steel Pipe Ltd. (SSP), Dammam, Saudi Arabia, is launching a major expansion at its facility in Dammam that will double its total production. When on-line January 2000, the new facility will produce a line of advanced pipe for the oil and gas industry and specific construction applications.

The new factory will allow SSP to manufacture 80,000 tons of HFI (high frequency induction) welded pipe per year on a single shift to satisfy growing demand for oil and gas line pipe in the Gulf.

The factory was designed and engineered with the technical assistance of DMS of France. At the heart of the plant is a solid-state HFI welding system provided by ELVA Induksjon a.s. Continuous electronic process controls will be employed on a real time basis as a means to achieve the highest reliability and predictability of welding integrity.

Two key features of the new mill are a 200 ton coil accumulator and continuous end-to-end coil welding from Coil Joining Technologies. The combined effect of these two features eliminates the many problems inherent in a traditional start/stop, coil by coil, welded pipe operation. It is widely recognized that steady-state continuous product flow yields superior performance in any welding operation.

Additionally, the inclusion of a sophisticated coil edge milling operation designed by Linsinger of Austria will provide perfectly engineered coil edges at the weld interface which will further contribute to weld integrity.

SSP is an industrial joint venture between Saudi entrepreneurs Rabiah & Nasser Co., Al Khorayef Sons Co., Fahad Moh'd Al Saja and Shinho Steel Co. of South Korea.
