Italian refinery to install 193 radar-tank gauges

Jan. 25, 1999
ESSO ITALIANA SPA AWARDED SAAB TANK CONTROL a contract to provide tank gauges for 193 tanks in its Augusta, Italy, refinery. The Saab TankRadar L/2 system (Fig. 1), to be installed on each tank, is a gauging system that uses radar to detect the liquid level within tanks. It has no moving parts and no contact with the liquid. The tank gauges can be installed while the tanks are still in service. They flange up to existing nozzles or still pipes on tank roofs.
Saab TankRadar 2930 is an example of one of many tank gauges that Esso Italiana SpA has purchased for its Augusta, Italy, refinery. This particular parabolic antenna gauge was designed for petroleum tanks with fixed roofs (Fig. 1).

Esso Italiana plans to install the gauges on about 80% of its offsite tanks. The products in the tanks include kerosine, gasoline, benzene, bitumen, and crude oil.

According to Saab, this project is believed to be the largest single tank-gauging project in Europe. All gauges are expected to be installed by the year 2000.
