The Prudhoe Bay Unit owners have launched a sea-lift barge carrying a 2,700-ton compressor module that will be used in the Prudhoe Bay Miscible Injectant Expansion (MIX) project. The module is nearly 9 stories high and more than 150 ft long. It is the largest such module ever assembled in Alaska, according to ARCO Alaska Inc., one of the unit owners.

VECO Construction Inc., Anchorage, will install the module at the Prudhoe Bay Central Gas Facility when it reaches the North Slope later this summer. VECO built the compressor module at a site in Anchorage developed by BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. for fabrication of oil production facilities for Northstar oil field. A team comprising ARCO, BP, Parsons Corp., and VECO personnel managed the 14-month construction project.

The MIX project will increase miscible injectant production by 20%. That, in turn, will boost oil production by 20,000 b/d later this year and increase ultimate liquids recovery by 50 million bbl. The MIX project will also increase gas output and reinjection to 8 bcfd from 7.5 bcfd.

The Prudhoe Bay miscible gas enhanced oil recovery project is the world`s largest, says ARCO Alaska, which is leading the project management team for the $160 million MIX project.
