REPAIR AND REFURBISHMENT TOOK PLACE earlier this year on Avon gas turbines at Rolls-Royce's Lachine, Que., plant.

These units are similar to two new Avons in the Coberra 2656 dry low-emissions packages to be installed in October 1999 for Transco, operator of the U.K. gas-transmission network, at its Aylesbury compressor station.

Replacing existing equipment there will increase the station's power by 20% while reducing nitrous oxide (NOx) and CO emissions by 50%, compared with conventional gas turbines, says Rolls-Royce plc, London.

Transco awarded the contract in November to Cooper Rolls, Mount Vernon, Ohio, a joint venture of Cooper Cameron Corp. of Houston, and Rolls-Royce.

Cooper Rolls says the new Avon DLE unit uses a unique fuel-staged combustion system, a premix lean-burn technology. A thorough mixing of air and fuel controls combustion temperature and NOx and CO emissions, while stabilizing combustion over the turbine's operating range.

The company says that, unlike other DLE systems, the Rolls-Royce system requires no bleeding of compressor delivery air.
