      • Rig automation, dual activity alters work roles
The Glomar Explorer (Fig. 1) [376,246 bytes] The riser elevator serves to bring 27-ton, 75-ft riser sections from within the ship's hold up to the main deck. Teamwork between the crane operator and assistant driller, both out of sight from one another, is important for smooth operations. The skate cart, located on the far left end, serves as an anchoring device as the riser is brought onto the drill floor (Fig. 2). [44,820 bytes]
      • Bi-metal, CRA-lined pipe employed for North Sea field development
Fabrication progresses of bi-metal pipe and ancillary supply and control lines into the 44-in. carrier pipe (Fig. 1). This is one of the hydraulic expansion presses, with top die and end-loading rams in open positions, used to manufacture bi-metal-lined pipe (Fig. 2). [45,451 bytes] Production process for bi-metal mechanically bonded pipe (Fig. 3 [95,736 bytes] Here, bi-metal pipe components have been assembled and are about to undergo hydraulic expansion (Fig. 4). [23,258 bytes] Typical
      • New concepts extend dry-tree production into deeper water
TLP components (Fig. 1) [85,917 bytes] Response characteristics (Fig. 2) [77,490 bytes] Gulf of Mexico TLP weight summary (Fig. 3) [73,526 bytes] Cost comparison (Fig. 4) [51,456 bytes] Composite riser (Fig. 5) [21,785 bytes] Framing comparison (Fig. 6) [49,361 bytes] Subsea separation and injection (Fig. 7) [47,561 bytes] Single-column floater (Fig. 8) [68,865 bytes] New concepts will allow dry-tree production in deeper water. This is important because dry, or surface, trees can significantly
      • Centrifuge cleans water discharges on Alba FSU
North Sea Discharges (Fig. 2) [74,992 bytes] A centrifuge system replaced coalescing filters for cleaning discharged water on Chevron U.K. Ltd.'s Alba floating storage unit (FSU), in the North Sea (Fig. 1). According to the centrifuge manufacturer, Westfalia Separator Ltd., Aberdeen, one main problem with the coalescing system was that filters had to be replaced twice per day, mainly due to clogging. About 160 filters/day were required to maintain the system. Also, some produced water was
      • Russia's oil exports likely to remain robust, despite official predictions
Russia's crude oil balance [237,465 bytes] It is widely known that the recent efforts of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to jack up world oil prices have been backed by some non-OPEC oil exporters. Among the latter is Russia, whose government promised to curtail the country's second-quarter crude oil exports by 100,000 b/d.
      • U.S. DOE to push African energy development projects
U.S. Energy Sec. Bill Richardson has launched a program to promote African economic growth through sustainable energy development and private investments in energy projects. The Department of Energy's Africa Initiative will seek to foster energy trade and investment and encourage regional market development. Richardson said that regional markets have the best chance of attracting private sector interest, and a growing energy market needs the efficiencies of free movement of goods and

      • Oil and an untidy war
Oil last week moved into the messy center of events in Yugoslavia. Aerial bombardment from a safe distance didn't stop Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic from persecuting ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. An oil embargo therefore joins the international campaign of inconvenience marshaled against him. The careful destruction of air defenses, highways and bridges, oil refineries and pipelines, propaganda networks, and an office in Belgrade somehow didn't teach Milosevic the lesson that the
