The firm let 11 construction contracts with a total value of $430 million (Canadian) for pipeline maintenance, looping, and compressor-station construction (OGJ, June 15, 1998, p. 36).

The summer construction and maintenance program is part of TransCanada's 1998 plan to increase main line capacity by 417 MMcfd to 7.3 bcfd. The company expects to reach its goal in November.

Capital spending to achieve the throughput increase will total $825 million.

Main line capacity increases will differ by region, says TransCanada. In eastern Canada capacity will increase by 59 MMcfd, in the U.S. Midwest by 171 MMcfd, and in the northeast U.S. by 187 MMcfd.

This year, a total of about 315 km will be added to the pipeline: 157 km in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, 71 km in northern Ontario, and 87 km in southern Ontario.

Thirteen of the line's 57 compressor stations will be upgraded this year. Work on 11 of these will be completed this summer.
