MOL Hungarian Oil & Gas Co. is planning to implement a refinery-wide information system at its Danube refinery.

The system will be developed and installed by the process and petroleum industry solution unit of IBM, London.

The new system will handle functions such as:

  • Planning and scheduling
  • Mass balance and yield accounting
  • Unit data reconciliation
  • Production data storage and reporting.

It will be integrated with the refinery's distributed control systems and with MOL's business management systems.

The system centers on IBM's Computer Integrated Production Refinery Operations System. Its open architecture means that MOL will be able to expand it as the company's information technology needs grow.

"Our integrated business unit applications will provide comprehensive information that will allow us to considerably improve the overall decision cycle time in operations and business management," said Istvan Nadasi, director of the MOL refinery and logistics business unit. "The system will allow MOL to be more responsive to customers and to improve its global competitiveness," he added.

Plant-wide information management is a growing trend in the refining industry (OGJ, Oct. 7, 1996, p. 31).

IBM began work on the system in January. Completion is scheduled at year-end 1998.
