Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (Adnoc) is poised this month to take delivery of the first in a series of four liquefied natural gas tankers ordered from Kvaerner Masa-Yards, Helsinki.

Due for delivery is the Mubaraz, which underwent sea trials early last November after sailing from Kvaerner's Turku New Shipyard at Turku, Finland. Delivery docking and gas trials were scheduled at Zeebrugge, Belgium.

Kvaerner said construction of the three remaining vessels in the Adnoc order is on time and to specification. Timetable for the three sister ships calls for deliveries of one each in June 1996 and January and May 1997. Adnoc placed the order in April 1993.

The vessels, to be operated by National Gas Shipping Co., will transport LNG from Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Co. to Tokyo Electric Power Co.

Kvaerner said the vessels are the first LNG tankers of their size with only four aluminum spherical cargo tanks. The goal is simplified operation of the cargo system.

The ships' hulls are built to a new, slender, low resistance design. Kvaerner reported sea trials of the Mubaraz showed good seakeeping, low fuel consumption, and exceptionally good maneuverability with very little noise and vibration from machinery, shaft line, and propeller.

Mubaraz vital statistics include length 290 m, breadth 48.1 m, depth to upper deck 27 m, design draft 11.3 m, deadweight 68,500 metric tons, gross tonnage 116,700 metric tons, machinery output 29,600 kw, and service speed 19.5 knots.

LNG tankers built by Kvaerner Masa-Yards have capacities ranging from 45,000 to 180,000 cu m.
