Riley Ohio Geological Survey Columbus Oil and gas exploration along the western margin of the Appalachian basin is experiencing renewed optimism as a result of recent significant discoveries in the Rose Run sandstone and Beekmantown dolomite of the Knox dolomite. In spite of the maturity of this basin and the density of shallow wells, numerous oil and gas pools and fields are thought to exist and continue to be found in these deeper Knox horizons.
