NEWS Shifting pattern of U.S. oil import sources tests viability of deepwater port projects

A.D. KoenSenior Editor-News Refiners in the U.S. have relied increasingly on crude oil feedstock imported from Latin America and Canada since the Iraqi war of 1990-91. Estimates by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) show non-U.S. producers in the Western Hemisphere combined this year through May to account for more than half the crude imported into the U.S. The trend in part eases concern that runaway growth of U.S. crude import volumes will force excessive reliance on supplies from Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries members in the Middle East.
