Phillips Petroleum Co. and partners have drilled their third potential producer on their Mahogany subsalt prospect in the Gulf of Mexico.

The combine suspended 3 Mahogany (SS 359 No. 2 ST2) as a potential production well on Ship Shoal South Addition Block 359. Drillsite is in 370 ft of water 80 miles off Louisiana.

Phillips and partners Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and Amoco Production Co. earlier declared the Mahogany reservoir commercial, making it the gulf's first subsalt field earmarked for development (OGJ, Apt. 24, p. 36).

The 3 Mahogany found the pay that flowed 7,200 b/d of oil in the discovery well but a deeper pay section, revealed in the No. 2 appraisal well, was dry. Phillips said failure to find pay in the deeper zone does not change development plans.

The Sonat D-F97 drilling. rig that drilled the third well will begin drilling the 4 Mahogany development well in a few weeks.
