Egyptian General Petroleum Corp. (EGPC) has invited offers from local and foreign companies for oil and gas exploration rights on three blocks.

Block I, the 5,600 sq kin East Bahariya concession, lies in the Western Desert. Block II, the 12,500 sq km Marakia concession, includes Mediterranean Sea and adjoining onshore acreage. Block III, the 12,000 sq km El Quseir concession, lies in the Red Sea.

Middle East Economic Survey (MEES) reported bidders may file for one or more blocks, singly or in association with other companies. Closing date for bids is Dec. 29.

MEES quoted EGPC Deputy Chairman Wafiq Mishrif as saving a number of companies had asked for the three blocks, but EGPC's policy is to let companies compete.

Amoco Corp. drilled seven wells on Block I in the 1970s and 1980s. Eight companies have held Block II acreage since exploration began in the 1930s, with Royal Dutch/Shell exploring offshore in the 1990s. Block III holds 13 holes drilled by a number of companies.

EGPC is accepting bids until Sept. 29 on 10 other exploration blocks opened for bidding this year. The blocks are in the Sinai re 'on, Nile 91 Delta, and Western Desert.
