Pakistan's campaign to boost production is making headway, largely on the strength of successes by combines led by foreign operators.
A group led by Occidental Petroleum (Pakistan) Inc. tested a gas discovery in Northeast Pakistan. Beijing's Xinhua News Agency reported the pay is the deepest in which gas has been tested in Pakistan.
In Southeast Pakistan, a unit of Union Texas Petroleum Holdings Inc. leads a group that has found more gas in the Badin area.
ATTOCK WILDCAT
Oxy's gas discovery is about 100 km southwest of Islambad in Attock district. The 2 Ratana flowed 23 MMcfd of gas and 938 b/d of 45 gravity condensate from Paleocene Patala and Lockhart at 16,024-400 ft.
The well is only 2 km from a gas pipeline. Oxy said a sales agreement has been reached with Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Co. that will facilitate placing the well on stream quickly.
The 1 Ratana discovery well, drilled in 1988-89 just 8 km east of the 2 Ratana wellsite, flowed 9.4 MMcfd of gas and 300 b/d of condensate, but mechanical problems prevented complete evaluation of the well (OGJ, Aug. 7, 1989, Newsletter).
Xinhua reported the Ratana structure covers about 69 sq km and was identified by Oxy as a result of seismic surveys conducted in 1985-86.
Oxy holds a 40.91% interest in the concession after payout. Partners are the government 25%, Pakistan's Oil & Gas Development Corp. (OGDC) 25%, Pakistan Oil Fields Ltd. 4.545%, and Attock Oil Co. Ltd. 4.545%.
BADIN FIND
Union Texas' Badin area gas strike is about 95 miles southeast of Karachi (see map, OGJ, Sept. 9, 1991, p. 36).
The 1 Nakurji flowed 21.1 MMcfd of gas through a 48/64 in. choke with 1,696 psi flowing tubing pressure from Cretaceous lower Goru at 5,782-88 ft.
Union Texas holds a 30% interest and is operator of a joint venture that includes Oxy 30%, and OGDC 40%.
The joint venture has been exploring in Pakistan since 1977. It produces about 18,700 bid of oil and 147 MMcfd of gas, accounting for about 30% of Pakistan's total oil production and 10% of its gas flow.
