The Nuvo Ufimsky refinery at Ufa, U.S.S.R., will get a sulfuric acid alkylation plant under a contract let to Foster Wheeler and its Soviet joint venture partner, Hydrocarbon Technologies (Hytech).

The $80 million contract calls for Foster Wheeler and Hytech to supply engineering and materials for the 300,000 metric ton/year unit.

The refinery, about 1,400 km east of Moscow in the foothills of the Urals, is one of three large refinery complexes at Ufa.

The new plant will have two parallel trains, each with an initial operating capacity of 100,000 metric tons/year. It will include spent acid regeneration, along with sulfur recovery units.

Both trains are being designed for expansion to 150,000 metric tons/year with addition of contactors and acid settlers.

Plant completion is scheduled for the fourth quarter 1993. The licensor for the alkylation process is Stratco. Monsanto is subcontractor for the spent acid regeneration unit.

The new plant will be financed by a trading organization that sells products from the refinery to generate hard currency.

Hytech, with headquarters in Grozny, U.S.S.R., is a joint venture of the Grozneftechim Institute of Grozny and Foster Wheeler Intercontinental of the U.S. Foster Wheeler Intercontinental will execute the contract through its U.K. affiliate, Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd.
