Excitement is building again in the Colorado-Kansas stateline play.

Pennsylvanian Morrow oil reserves are being added at the southeastern end of the productive area, in Kiowa County, Colo., and Greeley County, Kan.

The latest completions are 25-30 miles southeast of Cheyenne Wells, Colo., in Jace field and three MooreJohnson fields. All of those fields were discovered since mid-1989.

Union Pacific Resources Co. plans to drill as many as 10 more Morrow wells in the Jace field area, where it recently completed three new oil wells.

UPRC's proposed Jace field development program is not part of the company's Las Animas arch joint venture with Sinclair Oil Corp., Salt Lake City (OGJ, Apr. 29, p. 77).

One of UPRC's partners said that one Jace field well, 1-1 Pierson, encountered a 32 ft pay zone in Morrow. That thickness is in the same league with the average net pay thickness in Southwest Stockholm field 10-12 miles to the north in Greeley and Wallace counties, Kan.

Southwest Stockholm field, discovered in 1979, had an estimated 27 million bbl of original oil in place and had produced 5.5 million bbl of oil from nearly 90 wells through about 1989 (OGJ, Sept. 10, 1990, p. 87).

It is far too early to compare the two fields in other respects, however.

Jace field has produced 41,297 bbl of oil and 15.485 MMcf of gas through February 1991. At that time, only one UPRC well in the field was on production.

Amoco Production Co. and Ladd Petroleum Corp. have staked three Morrow wildcats in 19s-42w, southeast of Southeast Moore-Johnson field.

LATEST COMPLETIONS

Three recent UPRC completions have enlarged Jace field this spring.

UPRC's 1-1 Pierson, NE SW 1-18s-42w, was completed pumping about 310 b/d of oil with 30 Mcfd of gas and no water from Morrow perforations at 5,146-56 ft. Total depth is 5,330 ft.

UPRC completed northwest and southeast offsets in the same depth interval in Morrow in late May, according to Petroleum Information Corp., Denver.

Carr Exploration opened Jace field in July 1989. Its 1 Leathers, NE NE 1-18s-42w, pumped 152 b/d of oil with 16 Mcfd of gas from Morrow at 5,106-27 ft.

The well has been plugged, and Amoco is attempting to complete a twin well to the southwest.

Carr completed 1 Schneider, SE SE 1-18s-42w, in August 1989 pumping 153 b/d of oil and 32 Mcfd of gas from Morrow at 5,16570 ft.

The company plugged the well later that year after encountering mechanical problems downhole.

UPRC's first Jace field well, 2 Schneider 44-1, 300 ft west of the Carr 1 Schneider, was completed about 1 year ago pumping 123 b/d of oil with 14 Mcfd of gas from Morrow at 5,151-61 ft.

SPEAKER CONFIRMED

Meanwhile, near the northwest corner of Cheyenne County, Colo., at the opposite end of the Morrow play, Anschutz Corp., Denver, confirmed its Speaker field discovery.

The 3-13 Speaker, in 13-12s-51w, 19 miles south of Flagler, produced 5,436 bbl of 34.8 gravity oil and 1.12 MMcf of gas in 14 days in March 1991, state figures show.

The well is within one half mile southeast of the discovery well, Anschutz's 13-12 Bledsoe, in 12-12s-51w. It was completed in late 1990 flowing 590 b/d of 36.2 gravity oil with 177 Mcfd of gas from Morrow at about 5,350 ft.

Anschutz has drilled three other offsets and has staked location for another.
