Gotaas-Larsen Shipping Corp., Monaco, has placed an order for four very large crude carriers with double sides provided by ballast tanks with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Heavy Machinery Ltd. of South Korea.

The vessels, each 300,000 dwt, will cost about $400 million total.

They are scheduled for delivery between the end of 1992 and mid-1993.

The double sides provided by ballast tanks are designed to comply with the classification agency Det norske Veritas Class indication PP1 for protection of the environment.

The vessels will not have double bottoms, but Gotaas-Larsen said the design could be changed to meet future regulatory requirements.

The four vessel order will double the size of the company's crude oil tanker fleet to more than 2.5 million dwt.
