Interior proposes split of MMS's safety, leasing duties

US Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar proposed dividing the US Minerals Management Service and separating its environmental and safety regulations enforcement from its leasing and royalties collection operations."The job of ensuring energy companies are following the law and protecting the safety of their workers and the environment is a big one, and should be independent from other missions of the agency," he told reporters at Interior's headquarters on May 11.
