Pakistan posts 22 oil, gas finds in 2 years

Pakistan Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Syed Naveed Qamar said 59 onshore and offshore exploration wells were drilled in Pakistan since January 2008, resulting in 22 oil and gas discoveries.

Pakistan Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Syed Naveed Qamar said 59 onshore and offshore exploration wells were drilled in Pakistan since January 2008, resulting in 22 oil and gas discoveries.

Of these, 18 are under appraisal. The other 4 discoveries were initially appraised as having a reserve of 3.27 million bbl of oil and 404 bcf of gas.

Naveed Qamar said the government granted 126 licenses to different companies for exploration in Pakistan. Present production of crude is 66,390 b/d, which is processed at local refineries, he added.

To meet demand for petroleum products, Khalifa Coastal Oil refinery project with a capacity of 250,000 b/d and Byco Petroleum Pakistan Ltd. refinery project with capacity of 115,000 b/d are proposed to be set up in Balochistan Province.

Guyana

Gustavson Associates LLC, Boulder, Colo., issued a best estimate of a combined 2.8 billion bbl of oil as an undiscovered prospective resource on three prospects on the Corentyne license in the Atlantic off Guyana, said CGX Energy Inc., Toronto.

Since the basin has no commercial discovery, Gustavson used well data, regional geology, and 2D and 3D seismic to prepare the probabilistic estimate of that portion of the prospects lying entirely in the Corentyne PPL. The Corentyne Offshore PPL covers 9,180 sq km net to CGX.

CGX's former Eagle shallow fan prospect is now the Eagle Tertiary prospect. A series of traps in the Upper Cretaceous called the Eagle Deep West prospect and Eagle Deep East prospect are now the Eagle Lower Turonian prospect, Eagle Upper Turonian prospect, and Eagle Campanian lead.

The Eagle well planned for fourth quarter 2010 will test the three prospects plus leads in the Campanian and Maastrichtian. Gustavson has not estimated a prospective resource for these leads or for other leads on the Corentyne Offshore PPL that include the Wishbone Tertiary lead, and two leads in the Albian carbonate, Kabukalli and Crabwood.

Slovenia

Ascent Resources PLC said its Slovenia subsidiary and partners are prioritizing drilling prospects from positive results of a 3D seismic survey of 120 sq km in Slovenia and 25 sq km across the border in Hungary.

Nemmoco Slovenia Corp. said the Petisovci survey turned up 12 targets with a combined recoverable potential of 75 bcf on which a number of wells are to be drilled in 2010-2011. It can be expected that success at some of the prospects will lead to further targets as they investigate trap types not previously drilled in this area.

The original Petisovci project area is 35.5 sq km, and NSC's partners in the joint venture are Geoenergo, Stratic Energy Corp., and Kulczyk Oil Ventures Inc. NSC has a 45% interest in the shallow oil and gas reservoirs and a 15.75% interest in the deeper tight gas reservoirs.

The project area in Slovenia has been increased by 61.5 sq km in which Ascent through NSC has 75% interest in both the shallow and the deep reservoirs and is in partnership only with Geoenergo. It is in this extended area that the majority of the new prospects have been identified.

In the adjacent Hungarian part of the project, Ascent Hungary Ltd. has 50% interest in 90 sq km in partnership with MOL Oil and Gas PLC. Ascent Hungary let a contract for 65 sq km of 3D seismic and plans to drill two exploration wells. Possible locations have been identified from the 25 sq km of 3D already shot and processed.

Yemen

Oil and drilling fluid flowed at unstable rates on an open hole drillstem test at the Oil Search Ltd. Al Meashar-1 exploratory well in Block 7 in Yemen's Shabwa basin.

The test interval is 3,125-3,660 m measured depth, and the well is still recovering lost drilling fluid. Tests continued. The well topped fractured basement at 3,390 m MD.

Al Meashar-1 targets fractured basement rock in a structure defined by a 3D survey shot in 2008.

The wellsite is 18 km east of Nilam oil field on Block S2 and 15 miles northeast of Oil Search's Tubb'a-1 discovery well in Block 3 that sustained more than 14 MMscfd of gas and 500 b/d of condensate.

Interests at Al Meashar-1 are Oil Search (ROY) Ltd. operator with 34%, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co. (Aden) Ltd. 21.25%, ARC Energy Holdings Ltd. 21.25%, Mitsui Exploration & Production Middle East BV 8.5%, and Yemen General Corp. for Oil and Gas 15%.

British Columbia

Dejour Enterprises Ltd., Calgary, tested light sour oil at the rate of more than 500 b/d from the Triassic Halfway formation at its Woodrush project in the Peace River arch of Northeast British Columbia.

Dejour set production casing at the A-1-I/94-H-02 after it encountered a Halfway oil pool and other productive horizons (OGJ Online, Mar. 22, 2010). The well is on a newly defined seismic feature north of the 2008 Woodrush oil discovery made in Dejour's D-91-H well.

Production from the A-1-I well is to start by the end of March at initial rates between 300 and 400 b/d. Dejour is operator with 75% working interest and holds 18,000 net acres in the Peace River arch area.

Texas

Gulf Coast

Burleson Energy Ltd., Sydney, agreed to sell its Austin chalk wells and acreage in Burleson County, Tex., to Whittier Energy Co. for $1.344 million, retroactive to Jan. 1, 2010.

Burleson is following up on a late 2008 board decision to target conventional Gulf Coast reservoirs rather than the chalk. Lease rentals and renewal fees had begun to offset declining monthly production revenue.

Burleson has teamed with AKG Energy, Austin, and Marathon Oil in the Giddings and Champions areas of Burleson, Grimes, Montgomery, and Brazos counties and has at least 25 drilling targets including 9 firm wells. Operator AKG is seeking a second rig.

The property sale will give Burleson Energy more cash to contribute to drilling the Woppa prospect later in 2010. Woppa is an Edwards and Sligo prospect on a 119-sq-mile 3D seismic survey in Colorado County, Tex., in which Burleson Energy has 38% working interest.
