Refineries primarily process crude oil into motor and heating fuels, although other products can be made. These include gaseous fuels, feed gases for petrochemical processes, raw material for lubricant production, and asphalt. The widespread use of fossil fuels has greatly affected the environment. Specifically the increase in automotive and air traffic has caused substantial pollution. One important result has been increasingly more stringent rules with respect to the environmental acceptability of automotive and heating fuels. In the European Union, for instance, new regulations for automotive fuels have been in force since 2000 that required substantial reductions in harmful components...
