Human rights lawsuits: mitigating a new threat

Over the past decade, lawsuits have proliferated in US courts alleging human rights abuses against multinational companies. The oil and gas industry has been a primary target.Last winter, Chevron stood trial in a high-profile case in San Francisco, accused of responsibility for deaths and torture carried out by the Nigerian military aboard a company oil platform. In June, a case against Shell in New York, involving accusations that Nigerian security forces tortured and murdered environmental protestors, settled on the courthouse steps.
