Watching Government: GAO report sees duplications

The US Department of Energy should formally assess whether its oil and gas research and development projects would not have occurred without federal funding, the Government Accountability Office has recommended in a new report.The Jan. 9 report examined a program that has shrunk dramatically over several years despite having developed technologies that significantly improved domestic exploration and production.It noted that the US oil and gas industry spent at least $20 billion on R&D from 1997 through 2006, with a current focus mostly on near-term (within about 2 years) production challenges.
