SPECIAL REPORT: High energy prices: good or bad for NGLs?

Monthly average prices for crude oil have increased by a factor of five in less than 5 years since the end of 2003 and have nearly tripled in only the last 18 months. Global prices for propane and butane have also increased during this period, but at a noticeably slower pace. Thus, LPG has become relatively cheap during this rapid run-up in energy prices.In the US, prices for propane and normal butane have risen by a factor of “only” 3.5 since late 2003. Likewise, spot prices for propane and butane in Northwest Europe have increased by a factor of roughly 3.6 and 3.9 in 5 years.
