For the past several years, a study led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has developed procedures for independent estimation of flared gas volumes worldwide using satellite remote sensing.None of the currently available earth observation sensors is designed or flown specifically for observing gas flaring, although several satellite systems can detect gas flares based on the radiative emissions from the flames.Oil producers often flare associated gas because an area has no infrastructure for marketing or using the gas.
