SPECIAL REPORT: Alberta bitumen development continues its rapid expansion

The number of projects planned for developing the vast bitumen resources in Alberta’s oil sands continues to grow. Recent reports list 30 in situ projects and 23 mining and upgrader projects in various stages of completion (Tables 1 and 2).1-3The projects are in Alberta’s Athabasca, Cold Lake, and Peace River regions (Fig. 1).
