This second of four parts on the formation and potential of the structured belt of the Western Canada Sedimentary basin begins with discussion of how the structures formed.The belt mainly includes rocks of sedimentary origin in sequences of hard and soft layers of varying thicknesses. Mechanical properties of individual layers and of the entire package determine how the sequence will deform under specific stress conditions.Stress causes deformation, and structures are born.
