Chevron Corp. confirmed the discovery of hydrocarbons at the Obo-1 well, the first discovery in the Nigeria-Sao Tome and Principe Joint Development Zone (JDZ), said partner Afren PLC, London.

Logs showed a “cumulative total of at least 150 ft of net hydrocarbon pay in multiple reservoirs and provided important reservoir rock and liquid samples,” Afren said.

The well is in 5,640 ft of water on JDZ Block 1, 190 miles north of Sao Tome city and 125 miles south of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Interests in the block are Chevron JDZ Ltd. 51%, ExxonMobil Corp. 40%, and Dangote Energy Equity Resources Ltd. 9%. Afren owns 49% of the equity in Dangote Energy Equity.

Chevron spudded the well in January 2006 less than 20 km south of the Akpo and Egina discoveries in POL 246 off Nigeria (see map, OGJ, Sept. 8, 2003, p. 38). Signature bonus for Block 1 was $123 million.
