Cairn Energy to test sizable oil find in Rajasthan, India

Cairn Energy PLC, Edinburgh, reported that a significant oil discovery has followed a long string of tantalizing smaller successes in the Rajasthan basin in northwestern India.

Cairn Energy PLC, Edinburgh, reported that a significant oil discovery has followed a long string of tantalizing smaller successes in the Rajasthan basin in northwestern India.

Cairn Energy estimated oil in place at 450 million to 1.1 billion bbl and said 50-200 million bbl might be recoverable at the as yet untested N-B-1 exploration well on 5,000 sq km Block RJ-ON-90/1.

The company holds 100% interest in the block, and state Oil & Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. has a right to 30% of any development area resulting from a commercial discovery on the block.

The operator said the discovery is on a large simple structure 60 km north of Saraswati.

UK analysts Wood Mackenzie said that eventual recoverable volumes could total 110-260 million bbl, pending appraisal, from N-B-1 and three earlier discoveries on the block: Guda in 1999, Saraswati in 2001, and Raageshwari in 2003.

More drilling, tests

Cairn Energy was reviewing its program to allow early appraisal drilling of the N-B-1 discovery and exploratory drilling of similar nearby prospects.

It drilled N-B-1 in the Barmer District to 1,250 m and had not yet reached TD when it found the oil. It ran an intermediate log and evaluated fluid samples of 24° gravity oil from the Fatehgarh formation.

The well encountered two reservoir sections. One is a 136 m log evaluated gross oil column in silty sands of the Barmer Hill formation. Net pay is estimated at 22 m with 21% average porosity.

The other is a 185 m log evaluated gross column in "excellent high quality Fatehgarh sands," the company said. Net pay is estimated at 85 m with 25% average porosity and an oil-water contact.

Bill Gammell, Cairn Energy chief executive, said, "While further evaluation and appraisal is required I am confident that this discovery in isolation has the potential to transform the value of Cairn's portfolio."

The main exploration play objectives encountered in the Rajasthan basin, commencing with the stratigraphically youngest formation, are the Thumbli, Dharvi Dungar, Barmer Hill, and Fatehgarh.

Southern Rajasthan

Cairn Energy runs three rotaries and a workover rig on the block, where trial artificial lift operations are under way and well stimulations planned.

Exploration focuses on the deeper stratigraphic horizons of Barmer Hill and Fatehgarh in the northern third of the block. N-B-1 is 120 km north of the recently drilled GR-A-1 well.

Ten of 14 wells drilled have encountered hydrocarbons.

Exploration drilling on the Central Basin high on the southern part of the block has met with mixed results. Wells targeting the shallow Thumbli and Dharvi Dungar plays have encountered variable reservoir quality and sand thickness.

The GR-F-1 well discovered oil in Dharvi Dungar and flowed 100 b/d of 40° gravity oil on test. The Thumbli section was log evaluated as hydrocarbon bearing and will be tested soon. The GR-A-1 and GR-S-1 wells each encountered residual hydrocarbons only.

Other penetrations

The Saraswati-1 discovery well was placed on an early well test in August 2003. To date the Barmer Hill reservoir has produced 62,260 bbl at an average 817 b/d, and the Fatehgarh reservoir has produced 5,985 bbl, averaging 468 b/d.

Cairn Energy acquired a 3D seismic survey over Saraswati in 2003. Following interpretation, two appraisal/development wells are to be drilled updip of Saraswati-1, the first of which is to spud by the end of February.

The Raageshwari E-1 discovery well flowed 200 b/d of oil and 7.3 MMscfd of gas on a drillstem test at the Thumbli level. A follow-up EWT using artificial lift has just begun.

The GR-2 appraisal well 2.5 km south of the E-1 discovery well increased the oil column thickness to 90-120 m. The GR-3 appraisal well 2.5 km north of E-1 began drilling in January 2004. Further Raageshwari delineation wells are planned.
