New service helps optimize network performance

Bandwidth-on-Demand (BoD), a new connectivity service, optimizes network performance and offers tighter control of network operating costs.

It gives clients guaranteed access to network bandwidth, above and beyond their normal requirement on a pay-for-use basis. Easily accessed through this firm's network services portal, BoD is suited to occasions when increased network activity can be readily predicted, for example in bulk data transfer for seismic analysis, database refreshes, video conferencing, and data-rich video collaboration.

With rates for international connectivity services constantly fluctuating, buyers with variable requirements for network usage can now buy additional bandwidth online via a virtual spot market without having to enter into long-term contracts. Schlumberger connectivity services users are now able to plan ahead for periodic and or repeated spikes in traffic between any two or more locations on their networks.

As the first of a suite of premium value-added offerings, BoD addresses the needs of the global oil and gas operators with a service that the company says is currently unavailable from traditional telecommunications services providers.

The company launched its connectivity services portfolio in 2002 based upon a private IP MPLS network providing enhanced security and efficiency—using data prioritization and bandwidth optimization. Network services based upon this core infrastructure were deployed to provide an alternate communications route to oil and gas producing regions.

Valve tester doesn't require flow shutdown

The new Stroke-Test allows testing of critical valves without shutting down the process flow.

The new product operates on the principle of valve partial stroke testing, which allows a safety system to close a valve only partially. So, when it is fitted to a valve, it limits the movement of the actuator to within preset travel limits, for example 20°. This means that all valve control elements, such as solenoids, positioners, and relays are tested, without the valve having to close fully.

Since the valve is only partially closed during the test, the flow coefficient is not significantly affected, and process flow continues. If the valve is inoperable due to a mechanical failure, misalignment, or some other control anomaly, it will be detected during the partial stroke test.

Because the device is mechanical, it does not need to be integrated into the control loop, as would be necessary with an electrical system, the company points out. It is vibration-resistant, corrosion protected, and independently certified to IP67 to prevent water ingress. Stainless steel trim is used for all keys, shafts, and sockets, and it is permanently lubricated, sealed, and requires no routine maintenance.

Remote indicator provides multifunction display

The new Rosemount 752 remote indicator provides multifunction display on FOUNDATION fieldbus segments.

Adding to PlantWeb digital plant architecture functions, the 752 makes it possible to display data from intelligent field devices throughout the plant. The Rosemount 752 has ATEX intrinsically safe approval and FISCO certification to enable efficient use with devices and displays installed in hazardous areas.

Designed for monitoring in the field and close to the process, the unit is able to connect and sequentially display as many as eight function block values from any device on an H1 segment. Each plant measurement or reading is shown for 3 sec, along with a tag identifier and the engineering units.

Applications for the 752 Indicator include the display at grade level of data from any instrument mounted in an inaccessible location. For example, the indicator acquires data from instruments located on the top or bottom of tanks for use in measuring tank level and contents. Applications have also included the display of flow in elevated steam lines, and water flow in buried pipelines. The Rosemount 752 is a companion for the Rosemount 848T multi-input temperature transmitter, enabling the display of eight temperature readings.

The remote indicator can display all relevant information about a control loop, including the set point being requested, the output of a controller driving a valve, the valve position, and any function block output from any device on the segment. The 752 can also be equipped with its own function to provide advanced calculation and control capability for use with devices on the segment.
