Saudi Aramco has found a new natural gas reservoir in the heart of Shaybah oil field.
The Saudi state oil company reported the discovery late last month in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province.
The strike lies in the south-central portion of the supergiant field (see map).
On Mar. 16, the Shaybah-700 well flowed on cased-hole test at a rate of 20 MMcfd of gas and 650 b/d of condensate from an Arab C formation at 7,815 ft through a 1-in. choke with 1,135 psi flowing pressure.
Plans call for drilling to continue to evaluate gas potential of deeper pay.
Shaybah already contains a gas cap with reserves estimated at 25 tcf; there are no current plans to monetize that gas (see related story, this page).
