BP PLC, London, and its partners conducted a provisional assay of the Southern Green Canyon Blend crude.

This medium-sulfur crude from a new producing area in deepwater Gulf of Mexico will initially be a blend from three fields. These fields include Atlantis, Holstein, and Mad Dog, located about 150 miles offshore, south of New Orleans. Field owners are:

  • Atlantis: BP 56%, BHP Billiton Ltd. 44%.
  • Holstein: BP 50%, Shell Oil Co. 50%.
  • Mad Dog: BP 60.5%, BHP Billiton 23.9%, Unocal Corp. 15.6%.

Atlantis has reserves of 575 MMboe and the production facility will have a gross capacity of 150,000 b/d of oil and 180 MMscfd of gas (OGJ, May 20, 2002, p. 8).

Holstein has an estimated 600 MMboe of reserves (OGJ Online, Apr. 29, 2000).

Mad Dog's reserves are estimated at 400 MMboe (OGJ, Nov. 25, 2002, p. 8).

Production from Holstein and Mad Dog will begin in 2004, with Atlantis coming online in 2005.

This assay is based on multiple drill test samples from each of the three fields.
