Ashland announces senior vice-president, group operating officer

Ashland Inc., Covington, Ky., named Gary A. Cappeline senior vice-president and group operating officer. He also was appointed to the company's executive committee.

In his new role, Cappeline continues as president of Ashland Specialty Chemical Co. and adds oversight responsibilities for Ashland Distribution Co. and several corporate functions.

The latter includes accountability for the European shared business service center, the overall implementation of Ashland's business process redesign effort, and overseeing mergers and acquisitions.

Cappeline became president of Ashland Specialty Chemical in December 2002.

Doug Sharp was elected regional group president, Atoglas, for the Philadelphia-based Atofina Chemicals Inc. Sharp succeeded Jim Dunn, who has retired.

Sharp oversees overall business direction and management, including sales, marketing, and manufacturing in North and Latin America.

Most recently, Sharp served as manufacturing director, additives. Before that assignment, he was manager of the Atoglas plant in Bristol, Pa.

Upstream moves

Occidental Petroleum Corp. has named John L. (Jack) Hurst III as executive vice-president. Earlier this year, Hurst was appointed president of Occidental Chemical Corp.

He joined OxyChem in 1978 and served as plant manager in Taft, La., before working his way through the senior executive ranks of OxyChem.

Gary Masada has been named president and chief information officer of Information Technology Co. for ChevronTexaco Corp. Masada succeeds David M. Clementz, who has retired but will remain on the board.

Since 2001, Clementz has been responsible for providing the firm's computing and telecommunications technology services worldwide.

Previously, Masada was president of ChevronTexaco's energy research and technology division. He manages technical capabilities in process and equipment technology and process planning.

Forest Oil Corp., Denver, said board member Forrest E. Hoglund will become its chairman effective Sept. 30, succeeding Robert S. Boswell, who is resigning as chairman on that date.

Boswell already has resigned as CEO. Forest Pres. and Chief Operating Officer Craig Clark, became the new CEO.

Clark has been Forest's president and chief operating officer since September 2001, responsible for its worldwide operations. Previously, he worked in various exploration, production, and marketing capacities for Apache Corp., Houston.

Hoglund has been a Forest board member since 2000. He served as chairman of Enron Oil & Gas Co. from 1987 to 1999. He was president of Enron Oil & Gas from 1990 to 1996.

St. Mary Land & Exploration Co., Denver, promoted Doug York to executive vice-president, and he will become chief operating officer, effective Sept. 1.

Ron Boone, executive vice-president and chief operating officer, plans to retire effective Dec. 31, although he will remain on the board.

York has worked for St. Mary for more than 7 years, most recently as vice-president, manager of engineering and acquisitions.

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp., Houston, has promoted Thomas S. Liberatore to vice-president and regional manager of the eastern region. He previously was regional manager.

Liberatore joined Cabot in January 2002. Previously, he was vice-president, exploration and production, for North Coast Energy Inc., Twinsburg, Ohio.

Pipelines

Michael T. Langston was appointed vice-president, business development, regulatory and supply, for Panhandle Energy, Houston.

Langston most recently served as Energy Worx Inc.'s vice-president, customer service and regulatory. Energy Worx is a former subsidiary of the Austin-based Southern Union Co., Panhandle's parent corporation. Langston joined Southern Union in 1986 and has served in various positions of increasing responsibility.
