ChevronTexaco Corp. names executive of new unit

ChevronTexaco Corp. named John D. Gass corporate vice-president in charge of the newly formed ChevronTexaco Global Gas (CTGG).

Previously, Gass was managing director of ChevronTexaco's Southern Africa business unit in Luanda, Angola. James R. Blackwell, president of ChevronTexaco Pipeline Co. since May 2002, succeeded Gass as managing director in Luanda.

Gass is responsible for building ChevronTexaco's global gas business, and he oversees ChevronTexaco's shipping company and pipeline operations. In addition, Gass is a director for the London-based Sasol Chevron Ltd. gas-to-liquids joint venture.

ChevronTexaco and the South African-based energy and petrochemical group Sasol Ltd. are developing a GTL plant in the Escravos Delta region of southern Nigeria through Sasol Chevron (OGJ, Dec. 18, 2000, p. 46).

In other news, ChevronTexaco has named John Bethancourt, currently vice-president of human resources, to executive vice-president, technology and services, effective July 1.

Bethancourt will succeed Darry Callahan, currently executive vice-president, power, chemicals, and technology. Callahan plans to retire on June 30.

Other upsteam moves

Aspen Exploration Corp., Denver, promoted Bob Cohan to president, CEO, and chief financial officer.

Cohan has been involved with Aspen for 12 years, formerly holding the position of president, West Coast division. R.V. Bailey, Aspen's founder and former president, became vice-president and continues as chairman.

Suncor Energy Inc., Calgary, appointed J. Kenneth Alley as senior vice-president and chief financial officer, effective July 1.

Alley, current vice-president, finance, will succeed Steve Williams, who is moving to Fort McMurray, Alta., to lead Suncor's oil sands operations as executive vice-president, oil sands.

Alley, who has worked for Suncor almost 20 years, will direct Suncor's financial operations and will guide the company's sustainable development initiatives, information technology strategies, and services.

Trade association elections

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) board elected Roderick J. Allan as the 2004-05 chairman and William H. Luyties as vice-chairman for that same period.

Allan is core expertise manager for Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling Inc., Houston. Luyties is Na Kika project manager for Shell International E&P Inc.

Allan succeeds Charlie Richards of C.A. Richards & Associates Inc., Houston, as OTC chairman.

Dallas independent geologist Patrick J.F. Gratton is president-elect of the Tulsa-based American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Gratton will serve as AAPG president in 2004-05.

He assumes his president-elect duties July 1 when Stephen A. Sonnenberg of EnCana Energy Resources Inc., Denver, assumes the presidency. Sonnenberg is Team Lead North Piceance for EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc., a subsidiary of EnCana Corp., Calgary.

The 31,000-member association also elected Erik P. Mason, Shell Oil Co., Houston, vice-president and Robert L. Countryman, Occidental Petroleum Corp., Los Angeles, secretary.
