Amity Oil Ltd., West Perth, seems assured of a gas discovery in the Tertiary Danisman formation and also found gas in Oligocene Osmancik sandstone at its most recent Thrace basin wildcat.

Adatepe-1, 6 km southeast of Gocerler gas field and 140 km west of Istanbul, vented gas from Osmancik at 1,543 m and cut gas pay in Danismen at 1,173 m. Four thinner secondary targets between 904 m and 1,173 m also proved gas bearing.

Drilling continued toward planned TD of 1,700 m. Adatepe is a partly fault-closed anticlinal structure over which 3D seismic data showed amplitude anomalies coincident with structural closure, Amity said. The well is on Amity-operated Thrace Joint Venture Area A.

On Area B, operated by Turkiye Petrolleri AO, Cayirdere-1 was a gas discovery 33 km southeast of Gocerler field. Cayirdere flowed 3.1 MMcfd of gas with 761 psi surface flowing pressure on a 3/8 in. choke from Osmancik at 649-658 m. It is within 10 km of an operator-owned gas pipeline.

New Zealand

A New Zealand independent will attempt to confirm an apparent discovery drilled in early 2003 on PEP 38602 in the far nortwestern Taranaki basin.

A group that included ConocoPhillips, Inpex Northland Ltd., and Todd Petroleum Mining Co. Ltd., Wellington, spudded Karewa-1 in the last week of 2002. The Ocean Bounty semisubmersible drilled the well 50 km off Kawhia Harbour near the southern end of the 48,864 sq km permit. The wildcat was programmed to late Miocene Mangaa formation sandstones at about 2,000 m.

Neither water depth, TD, nor well results were released.

ConocoPhillips and Inpex withdrew from the permit, and Todd was granted an extension of up to 4 years on 244 sq km around the well. Work program under the extension is 200 line km of 2D seismic data in the first 12 months.
