Significant reserves may remain in parts of Peru's Marañón basin

Exploration in the Marañón basin of northeastern Peru has focused primarily on one type of trap for the last 20 years, and consequently well sampling has become somewhat biased in recent years, not necessarily reflecting the basin's true potential.This is a key finding of the Marañón basin Technical Study, carried out over two years by Parsep (Proyecto de Asistencia para La Reglamentación del Sector Energético del Perú), which is a joint venture between the governments of Peru and Canada.The exploration attention in the basin historically has been for structures with ancestral growth that predate the primary Cretaceous hydrocarbon generation phase.
