Senate asks Interior to halt new drilling off California

Following related House action earlier this summer, the US Senate unanimously approved a measure that seeks to prohibit new drilling activity on 36 undeveloped federal oil and gas leases off the California coast (see related item, OGJ Newsletter).The provision was added to the fiscal 2003 Department of the Interior appropriations bill (HR 5093). The amendment, offered by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) is a nonbinding measure that urges Interior not to develop the leases off Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties."The people of California do not want further oil drilling off our beautiful coast," said Boxer.
