New North Sea pipelines provide gas for EOR

The miscible-gas enhanced oil recovery project for the North Sea Magnus field included the construction of the first permanent pipeline system in the West of Shetlands area of the North Atlantic margin.

The recently completed $320 million system carries gas from the Foinaven, Schiehallion, and Loyal fields in the West of Shetlands to the Sullom Voe terminal in Scotland, at which point the gas is enriched with natural gas liquids. Another pipeline transports the enriched gas to the Magnus platform for injection (Fig. 1).

The Magnus EOR project required the construction of a pipeline infrastructure (Fig. 1).

BP PLC, operator of Magnus, says the benefits of the project include:

Beneficial use of excess gas from the Foinaven and Schiehallion fields that currently is injected into gas disposal wells.

More efficient hydrocarbon production at Magnus.

Reduction in atmospheric emissions from power generation by making natural gas available to both SVT and the market.

BP estimates that the project will increase Magnus recoverable reserves by about 50 million bbl of oil and extend the field's life by several years beyond 2015.
