Nelson-Farrar indexes for finished steels changed randomly during the period 1998-2001. Generally speaking, the alloy steels changed less than carbon steel products.

Alloy bars started the period with an index value of 787.5 and finished at 749.7. Alloy sheets stood at index value of 523.8 in early 1998, and at 487.9 in late 2001.

Index for cold-rolled sheets was 1113.1 during the first quarter of 1998, and stood at 951.6 during the last quarter of 2001. During the same period, structural plates started the 4-year period at an index of 1176.9, and ended at 966.6.

Composite index for steel products varied from 1028.8 in the first quarter of 1998 to 882.7 during the last quarter of 2001. The composite category includes all steel-mill products. This analysis shows relative stability in the cost of finished steels over the 1998-2001 period.
