Trenton oil, gas play indicated in NW Ohio

A small Canadian independent said it has discovered what appears to be an important oil and gas trend in a sparsely drilled portion of northwestern Ohio.

Zorin Exploration Ltd., Calgary, said the Roszman-1 well in Wyandot County "encountered oil and gas in a completely dolomitized Upper Ordovician Trenton zone" that is estimated by Ryder Scott Co. to contain proved and probable reserves of 189,000 bbl of oil and associated liquid-rich solution gas based on 40 acres.

The Trenton zone is 62 ft thick with 22% maximum porosity and 10% average porosity. Sales from the well, drilled in January 2002, have started at 70 b/d of 43° gravity oil. The well went to TD 1,400 ft at a cost of about $100,000.

Roszman-1 is 6 miles southeast of Zorin's first well, Hensel-1, drilled last year (OGJ, Sept. 10, 2001, p. 58). Hensel-1, 4 miles northwest of Marseilles, Ohio, has been assigned proved and probable reserves of 732 MMcf of gas by McDaniel & Associates Consultants Ltd.

Hensel-1's uppermost perforations flowed 1.4 MMcfd, and the next lower set flowed 2 MMcfd of gas and 20 b/d of light oil. Zorin said Hensel-1 was its third well in Ohio, but it did not provide information on another well.

The company said it has discovered a 9-mile long Ordovician fault trend and "confirmed the existence of significant hydrocarbon reserves and productivity at both ends of a 6-mile interval located in the middle of the fault trend."

The trend is in Wyandot County 12 miles southwest of Carey oil field, which has produced more than 30 million bbl of oil since discovery in 1887. It is also 22 miles southeast of the giant, nearly depleted Lima-Indiana trend.

Zorin, which operates through its Ohio subsidiary MAR Oil Co., plans to acquire 2.5 sq miles of 3D seismic data by midyear near the Roszman-1 well and drill as many as 5 more wells by yearend.

The company has 8 seismic lines that confirm the trend's 9-mile continuity, over which it holds the leases. Based on 40-acre drainage, this implies as many as 45 potential well locations.
