New well abandonment tool

This new next generation subsea cutting tool provides well severance and is designed to help reduce in-well operational time by as much as 50%.

The enhanced multistring cutting tool is a customizable internal multistring conductor cutter that provides well severance from tool deployment to cutting operation and tool recovery within 12 hr, the firm notes.

First developed more than 2 years ago in response to demand for a specialist subsea cutting solution that severs fully grouted or nongrouted casing strings, the tool has undergone enhancements including a new design of cutting head. It also now includes wireless data transmission technology, which removes the need for data cables and eliminates the threat of cable damage.

When used in conjunction with this company's water abrasive cutting technology, the tool offers clients a cutting solution for challenging decommissioning and abandonment requirements. In a recent count, the tool had severed 42 wells. The new tool measures 9 ft 10 in. in length and 8 in. in diameter.
