US Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced a bill on Oct. 18 aimed at facilitating federal approval of US LNG exports as much as 51.1 bcf/year.
The senators jointly said the measure would codify a US Department of Energy proposal to expedite such exports to countries in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America (OGJ Online, Sept. 5, 2017).
“Faster approval of small-scale natural gas shipments will create American jobs, improve Caribbean energy security, and lower greenhouse gas emissions,” Cassidy said.
The measure would strengthen an emerging sector of Florida’s economy as it bolsters existing ties with Caribbean and Latin American countries “while ensuring that bad actors in the region, including Cuba and Venezuela, do not reap its benefits,” Rubio said.
Their bill, S. 1981, was referred to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, of which Cassidy is a member.
