The source of an oil spill off southern Kuwait remained undetermined Aug. 14 as officials said floating oil had been contained and clean-up was in progress.

The spill was first reported Aug. 12 off Al Zour, where Kuwait National Petroleum is building a 615,000-b/d refinery and petrochemical complex (OGJ Online, Mar. 13, 2014).

Khafji Joint Operations, which operates offshore production shared by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, said it had detected no leaks from its facilities.

In a statement, the operator said it activated its emergency spill plan “following the reports about oil leakage from an oil tanker.”

Area power plants reduced generation for 2 days while emergency crews from KNPC, Kuwait Oil Co., and other oil companies worked to control the spill.

There were no official estimates of the spill’s size.
