The AWE Ltd.-led partnership with fellow Sydney-based Origin Energy Ltd. has reached total depth with its Waitsia-4 appraisal well in the onshore Perth basin of Western Australia and encountered gas in primary and secondary targets (OGJ Online, July 10, 2017).
AWE says elevated gas shows were encountered in multiple zones in the Kingia and High Cliff reservoir intervals, while good gas shows were also found in the secondary target Irwin River Coal Measures.
The significance of these shows will now be evaluated during the wireline logging program.
Waitsia-4 was designed to appraise the gas potential of the eastern extension of Waitsia field. If logging results are positive, the well will be completed as a production well. AWE says a flow test may be performed. Waitsia-4 is the final appraisal planned for the field this year.
The well was drilled about 18½ km southeast of Dongara and 3.3 km north-northeast of the previous Waitsia-3 well (OGJ Online, July 5, 2017).
AWE and Origin each have equal interest in the field, which is regarded as the largest onshore conventional gas discovery in Australia in the last 30 years. It has the capability to supply Western Australia with 100 terajoules/day of gas for 10 years.
